Is Charlotte Tilbury Cruelty Free & Vegan?
Charlotte Tilbury has always refrained from selling in China. But, in recent times, we are seeing Charlotte Tilbury pop-up stores in the provinces of mainland China. Some say Charlotte Tilbury is on the way to its ‘big Chinese debut’. Some say it is still cruelty free.
Are you wondering what to believe? Should you buy Charlotte Tilbury as an animal lover or should you ditch it for good? Check out our post, you’ll get some of your hot doubts answered!
Charlotte Tilbury – Past & Present
Initially: Charlotte Tilbury Beauty is the brainchild of world-famous makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury. The British makeup artist had a growing fondness of makeup since her childhood days in Ibiza and Britain. She completed her dream training at the Glauca Rossi School of Makeup.
Followed by starting her career as an assistant of another makeup genius Mary Greenwell. Her work got featured on the front pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair. With her star models including Kim Kardashian, Kate Moss, Charlotte proceeded to Fashion weeks of Milan, Paris, and London.
2013: Award-winning makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury launched her own line of makeup and skin care, Charlotte Tilbury Beauty in London, 2013. Her brand became the biggest makeup retailing brand in the new launch category. Soon she started expanding her brand beyond Europe. Currently, Charlotte Tilbury is available in 76 countries including US, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Dubai, and Qatar.
2020: In 2020, Charlotte Tilbury’s biggest share was acquired by Spanish fashion brand Puig. However, Charlotte still holds her position as the president, chairperson, and creative head.
What does the brand say about its Cruelty-Free status?
“Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Ltd and our suppliers do not currently test our products or ingredients used in our products on animals for cosmetic purposes. In addition, we do not use third parties to carry out any of those tests.”
According to the brand’s official cruelty testing statement, all their products are free from animal tests. They have also declared that all their product ingredients come from cruelty free suppliers. They conclude their statement by saying they are not hiring any outside companies or laboratories to run animal tests for them. This last statement is not at all valid seeing Charlotte Tilbury’s current sales policies. Let’s talk about why.
Post-market testing would only be required on the rare occurrence of a serious consumer safety concern. We would then withdraw the product if needed, rather than have it be subject to any animal testing.”
The brand does address pre-market testing too in their statements. But fortunately, since January of 2021, Pre-market testing is no longer required legally in China.
When Charlotte Tilbury’s pop-up testing counters started to emerge many people sent personalized queries on their cruelty free status. Answering a question from Free The Bunnies, Charlotte Tilbury said, under consumer complaint tester products of their pop-up stores might get to the point of ‘off-the-shelf’ testing or post-market testing.
In that case, they will consider withdrawing the concerned product entirely rather than allowing animal tests. From this statement, we can surely say that Charlotte Tilbury is aware of their products being susceptible to animal testing in China.
Cruelty Free Timeline
2013: Since its launch year, that is 2013, up till 2019 Charlotte Tilbury was a confirmed cruelty-free brand. They did not have any cruelty free certifications in their bag. Still, their policies were transparent and free from animal testing.
2019: Suddenly, in late 2019, people started talking about Charlotte Tilbury’s presence in mainland China through their seasonal pop-up stalls. Several pictures of such makeup testing booths showed up on social media.
Later Charlotte Tilbury clarified those booths didn’t sell any makeup items by direct sales. They provided Christmas special makeovers to probable customers. Consumers have to go through the same off-border shipping policy as earlier. After the festive seasons, those counters were closed.
As we all know, any cosmetic you apply to consumers publicly falls under China’s animal testing radar. If some consumer lodges complain about any product of the counter, it will get tested on animals via post-market testing. Charlotte Tilbury’s backend already knew these facts.
Currently: Hearsay goes like this; Charlotte Tilbury might open up such makeup testing stalls again. We don’t have much information to confirm this fact till now.
Is Charlotte Tilbury Cruelty Free?
Charlotte Tilbury’s current cruelty free status is not clear at all. Since 2019, Charlotte Tilbury has engaged itself with mainland China’s Little B store to open up pop-up makeover stalls. You can’t buy products directly from those counters. You have to order products online.
Still, the tester products are being tested by consumers. Any cosmetic used by common people in China is susceptible to post-market animal testing. That means, if any consumer complains about any product, these counter testers will go straight to animal testing labs.
Charlotte Tilbury’s makeup range is free from cruelty supported ingredients or finished product cruelty tests. Still, we can’t certify Charlotte Tilbury as a cruelty free makeup brand.
Does Charlotte Tilbury manufacture in China?
No. As per our knowledge, Charlotte Tilbury products are not manufactured in China. Charlotte Tilbury produces their makeup products in Italy. Their skincare solutions come from their UK and Northern Ireland manufacturing units.
Does Charlotte Tilbury sell in China?
Yes. You can buy Charlotte Tilbury products in China through indirect sales. Till the first half of 2019, you could only order Charlotte Tilbury by availing of overseas shipping. It would reach directly to you without any cruelty driven testing.
In 2019’s Christmas sale, Charlotte Tilbury opened up pop up counters in mainland China in collaboration with shopping chain Little B. Those counters were only for product testing. People had to order via online stores as usual. This sale inflating tactic was only possible when Charlotte Tilbury agreed to China’s post-market animal testing rule.
Is it vegan?
Charlotte Tilbury’s entire product range is not vegan. Many Charlotte Tilbury products are free from animal-sourced ingredients. However, there still are multiple products containing animal by-products. Can’t tag Charlotte Tilbury as 100% ‘vegan’ in any way.
Do we recommend Charlotte Tilbury?
Not anymore! Would have recommended Charlotte Tilbury to you in 2018. But that’s in the past now. Charlotte Tilbury has to stay out of the cruelty-free list because of its hazy stance on animal testing.
On one side they are talking against animal testing in their official statement. While on the other hand, they are arranging pop-up testing counters in mainland China. Products from these testing stations fall under China’s mandatory animal testing policy.
Should you support a brand that lacks transparency in its policies?
