Do your skincare products have powerful ingredients? Yes, they do. But they also contain certain filler ingredients to supply thickness, texture, color, or just fragrance. Here is a detailed report on The Ordinary. Keep reading!

The Ordinary- Past & Present

2013 – The Ordinary is the child concern of famous beauty brand DECIEM. In 2013, Brandon Truaxe established the brand to introduce transparent skincare in the beauty industry. Brandon’s dream was to make people understand the value of ingredients. He believed people should pay for what’s inside a skincare item; not for the brand’s label.

2016 – The Ordinary came into existence in 2016. Within two years, it reached the height of popularity because of its potent products.

2018 – In 2018, The Ordinary went through turmoil due to Brandon Truaxe’s decision of releasing Kilner, the thinktank of The Ordinary. However, Kilner returned to The Ordinary shortly after and was placed as CEO after a lawsuit against Estee Lauder, a stakeholder of The Ordinary.

2020 – The Ordinary has reached another mark of popularity. Millions of followers on Instagram and other social media never stop praising their favorite brand, The Ordinary. Innovation function and transparency are mottos of this cruelty-free and vegan brand.

2021 – Estee Lauder now owns a large stake in The Ordinary. Estee bought a major stake by paying a whopping amount of $1bn. Earlier, Estee owned 29%. Now, it is 76%. (Source)

What The Ordinary says about their Cruelty-Free Status?

You can find the following on their official website:

As required by the European Cosmetics Regulations, we only work with suppliers who do not perform animal testing…. DECIEM and The Ordinary do not test on animals and do not ask others to do so. For this reason, none of our brands or products are sold in stores or conventional retailers in mainland China, since such sales require animal testing for registration purposes.

The Ordinary’s official testing and safety statement are quite precise and clear. In simple words, they clarify most of the users’ doubts regarding animal testing standards followed by the brand to prepare their world-famous formulations. The brand mentions that they do not perform animal cruelty-based tests on their own. Their older umbrella brand DECIEM also followed the same rules on this ground. The Ordinary follows UK’s animal testing banning measures properly. But, now as of 2021, it is owned by Estee Lauder that is not cruelty free.

They only buy raw materials from suppliers who do not test their products on animals. This brand also made it a point not to sell their products in Chinese retails stores. Their statement says they don’t want to engage in animal testing which is a mandate if you want to sell cosmetics in China.

PS: However, do note that Ordinary is now owned by Estee Lauder that is an active participant in animal testing. The changes are not reflected on their website yet.

Cruelty Free Timeline

Initially – From the beginning, The Ordinary’s target was to produce fuss-free skincare products. They never used animal testing to encourage their selling points. That’s why their products are not sold in countries where animal testing is a mandatory step to gain selling registration. The Ordinary products are free from animal cruelty. The Ordinary’s cruelty free policy is also supported by its former brand DECIEM.

The Ordinary is a PETA and Leaping Bunny-certified cruelty-free brand.

2021 – Estee Lauder stake has increased to 76% in 2021 after they agreed to the deal of $1bn.
