It’s all about the ingredients. As we all know, skin care is all about using correct ingredients for your skin. Cetaphil products offer the most such ingredients that work wonders for every skin type.
Their Gentle Cleanser and moisturizers have cetyl alcohol. It keeps your skin’s moisture barrier as healthy as baby skin. But it is not so “gentle” to our fur friends’ skin or soul for that matter.
Yep, you guessed it right. Cetaphil still tests their products on animals to gain the market share. Not just Cetaphil, its parent brand Galderma is also involved in such ruthless practices.
Don’t worry if you like this brand! In this article, you’ll find 5 Alternatives to the highly recommended products from Cetaphil.

Cetaphil – Past & Present
1947: Cetaphil, as a brand, emerged in 1947. It was founded by a Texas based pharmacist. Not much information is there about Cetaphil’s beginning days except for the product selection.
Cetaphil’s first product was a Cleansing Lotion. It was a soap free liquid cleanser that can be used with or without water. It became an instant hit in the pharmacies of the US.
In fact, it still remains a worldwide bestseller from Cetaphil. Yes, you guessed it right! We are talking about the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.
Even after this many years, the brand hasn’t changed the formula (not even a single ingredient!) and people all over the globe still live by this.
Cetaphil is currently a venture of Nestle group’s healthcare division. It works under the famous drug manufacturing brand, Galderma Laboratories.
2017: In 2017, Cetaphil celebrated its 70 years anniversary. You can buy Cetaphil products in drugstores, local grocery stores in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, China, South America, South Africa among others.
What Cetaphil says about their Cruelty Free Status?
Go to any country specific website of Cetaphil and you’ll find only one line regarding their animal testing policy. The line says they do not use animal testing in any stage of their manufacturing process.
Nowhere in their website you’ll find anything about Cetaphil’s allowance of mandatory animal testing.
Does Cetaphil test on animals?
No, Cetaphil does not test any of its products on animals.
Yes. Cetaphil allows their products to be tested by third parties. Their imported products are tested in China. Imported cosmetics has to pass a step of ‘safety testing’. This step requires to use animals testing to sell in the mainland Chinese market.
Cetaphil and its umbrella brand, Galderma abides by this animal testing requirement and provide funds for this testing.
Cruelty Free Timeline
There is not enough information regarding the history of Cetaphil’s stance in the cruelty and testing sector. However, its owning brands, Nestle and Galderma (currently a subsidiary of Nestle) were never really cruelty free in the past.
Cetaphil too is not a cruelty free brand. It allows animal testing in certain cases.
Is Cetaphil Cruelty Free?
A big NO. Cetaphil is not cruelty free because of two reasons.
Firstly, it allows animal testing on their products whenever required by certain country authorities.
Secondly, Cetaphil’s owning brand Galderma is registered as a medicine brand. Not just China, many other countries mandate animal testing on brands making consumable medicines. Naturally, it is highly likely that Cetaphil is animal tested.
Does Cetaphil manufactures in China?
Most of Cetaphil’s US range gets manufacture in China. However, they do own manufacturing units in other countries too.
For example, Cetaphil makes its Indian range at their Indian manufacturing units. But, they do sell a fraction of their international range at Indian mass market as imported products.
Not much information is there about Cetaphil’s Chinese product catalogue.
Does Cetaphil sells in China?
Yes. Cetaphil products are widely available in many provinces of China. It is sold in mass markets, drugstores and departmental stores. You can also buy Cetaphil in China from its dedicated Chinese online shop.
Is it vegan?
According to Cetaphil, apart from the Gentle Cleansing Bar, all other products are 100% animal derived ingredients free. This cleansing bar contains a fatty acid based cleanser called Sodium Tallowate sourced from tallow.
Cetaphil is not 100% vegan, but they have many vegan products.
Do we recommend Cetaphil?
No. Can’t recommend a cruelty based skin care brand like Cetaphil just for the sake of popularity. Cetaphil is neither cruelty free nor completely vegan.
Moreover, medicine manufacturing company Galderma owns it. Drug brands often have to go through severe animal testing stages in many countries; not just China.
Additionally, PETA is aware about Cetaphil’s cruelty testing status. That’s why they have put Cetaphil in their brands to avoid the list.
