This is a data report where we checked the top celebrity-backed beauty companies. We examined the celeb makeup, skincare and hair brands for their animal testing policy and cruelty-free status.

How was this report curated?

We looked at the top beauty brands that are in partnership and/or partially, fully or co-owned by celebrities. We considered top 56 brands in the US for 2023.

What is cruelty-free?

Cruelty-Free signifies a product or its components being free from animal testing at any stage of the production process, encompassing ingredients, formulations, and the final product.

How does Cruelty-Free Guide check the brand’s status?

Any brand can claim to be ‘Cruelty-Free’. It may not always align with standardized industrial practices, as the term lacks a universal legal definition. Hence, the lack of a regulatory framework leaves room for loopholes and marketing gimmicks.

We don’t go by what the brand says but by what action it takes to showcase its cruelty-free nature.

• We look for cruelty-free logos and certifications. No visually appealing bunnies or kittens, standard authorized logos – Leaping Bunny and/or PETA only.
• If a brand isn’t certified, it can still be cruelty-free. So, we reach out to them and ask several questions to know more about their testing policy.
